Value

Once the principles of contour, gesture, and perspective drawing have been achieved, adding value is very straightforward. When adding value, atmospheric perspective is kept in mind, where objects in the foreground are much more detailed and objects in the background lose contrast.

Composition is almost nearly as important as the ability to render accurately. The first and last drawings are 22"x30" and the second and third drawings are 12"x18". All of the drawings are rendered in graphite.

The first composition is a themed still life with value.

The second composition is a value drawing.

The third composition is a value drawing with the same objects from the second composition.

The last composition is an incomplete value drawing done in class. Contour lines were added to help the viewer visualize the composition, despite its partial completion.
